3. My Greatest Gift: A Knee Injury

Yoga Optimized was born from a moment that changed everything: a knee injury in 2000 that forced me to question not just how I practiced yoga, but why. That injury wasn’t the end of my teaching career—it became the beginning of a deeper inquiry into how yoga actually works in the body, and why so many well-intentioned practitioners get hurt despite doing everything “right.”

As I healed, it became clear that the issue wasn’t yoga itself, but a literacy gap in how it’s practiced. Too often, poses are approached as shapes to achieve rather than experiences to feel. Without an understanding of biomechanics, load distribution, and sensation, practitioners unknowingly trade long-term joint health for short-term flexibility or external success.

Through decades of study, experimentation, and teaching, I developed the principles of DUO (Dynamic Unifying Opposition) and Sensation-Guided Attunement—tools that allow us to create precise, supportive stretches in target tissues while intelligently distributing forces through the joints. This approach doesn’t remove depth or challenge; it refines it, making practice both safer and far more effective.

Many yoga injuries stem from the same root causes:

  • Ego-driven Endpoints that override bodily feedback in favor of aesthetics
  • Lack of education in biomechanics and joint loading
  • Misinterpreting sensation, assuming discomfort always equals benefit
  • Dulled pain signals, influenced by the body’s endogenous opioid system

Yoga Optimized exists to address these gaps—not to discard tradition, but to evolve it with care and respect. What began as my personal healing journey became a lifelong commitment to innovation and service: to help others move with more intelligence, less fear, and greater longevity. The goal is simple yet profound—decrease the risk of injury while increasing the benefits of the practice, so yoga can truly support us for life.
